Want a happier marriage? Share the housework equally.
Women Whose Husbands Share Chores Are Healthier and More Sexually Satisfied
Women whose partners tackle a fair share of the household chores are healthier and more sexually satisfied, according to two new studies.
The first, published in the Journal of Marriage and Family, found that heterosexual couples in which the man performed 35-65% of the housework had more sex than couples with conventional and counterconventional roles, theChicago Tribunereports.
Another, more recent study, published in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, found that women who work 60 or more hours a week are at an increased risk of chronic disease, theHuffington Postreports.
"My speculation is that women have to play a lot of multiple roles," said Allard Dembe, professor at Ohio State University's College of Public Health and lead author of the latter study. Dembe believes roles like caregiving and housekeeping result in added stress that leads to disease risk.
So what happens when a working woman shares the domestic labor with her partner? There's more time for, well, sexy time, apparently.
According to the first study, egalitarian couples, which split chores almost evenly, have sex an average of 6.8 times per month; that's 0.5 times more per month than conventional couples, where the woman does the bulk of the housework, and twice as often as counterconventional couples, in which the man does most of the chores.
"Perceived inequality has deleterious impacts on couples' sex lives, and today more men and women believe that conventional or counterconventional domestic arrangements are unfair," the authors wrote.
