"Pinched" nerves and blood vessels: the truth or the myth
“Doctor, my back hurts, apparently, he is pinching something,” says a young man who spends the whole day in the office, then gets into the car and goes home to sit at the computer until night. It is impossible to explain that it is impossible for any doctor to “crush” this disaster until the patient himself begins to do at least a daily fifteen minute set of exercises for the muscles of his long-suffering back. Injured!
The idea of "pinching" the nerves and blood vessels for some reason continues to gain popularity among the inhabitants. Panic attacks, various types of dizziness, pain and other ailments are explained by “pinching”. There are even ENT doctors who, after examining a patient with complaints of hearing loss, refer him to a neurologist with parting words: “Yes, you have osteochondrosis, the vessels, you know, are trapped, and your hearing has decreased.” Manual therapists also support this idea, because the focus on “reposition of vertebrae and intervertebral hernia” is their main breadwinner.
It is amazing how such an imperfect human organism turned out in the process of evolution. He turned a little - his back was pinched. He sneezed - pinched vessel. Neither move a poor man, nor move. There is a risk of pinching everywhere. So neurotics are obtained, which are afraid to go out once more to the street: what if the wind blows and how will something get in the body? Surprisingly, even panic attacks some manage to fit into this theory. It is not clear, however, what exactly and how is trapped in such patients. Probably, amygdala - the structure of the brain, which is responsible for the feeling of anxiety, - is jammed between the ears?
Let us examine the typical symptoms that are usually attributed to “pinching”.
The most common cause of dizziness is not found in the brain or even in the vessels that feed it. Benign positional vertigo is a problem that is familiar to both young and old. It comes from the maze - a component of the inner ear. Sometimes it forms microscopic "pebbles" that irritate the maze receptors. From there, the information goes to the relevant parts of the brain and is perceived as “vestibulara catastrophe ”, which causes dizziness with a sense of rotation of the environment in any direction.
In Russia, it is customary to engage in overdiagnosis, so very often the patient has “narrowing of the vertebral arteries on the background of osteochondrosis”, vertebrobasilar insufficiency syndrome or vertebral artery syndrome and begin to “heal”. Dizziness goes away by itself, but the patient has pleasant memories from intravenous drip infusions and intramuscular injections of meldonium, derivatives of pork brains or calf blood, and therefore he prefers to think that it was they who helped him. In fact, cervical osteochondrosis can be found in every person over 30 years old, and congenital contraction or tortuosity of the vertebral arteries due to the fact that vascular ultrasound has become a routine procedure is also not a rarity. And the detection of these problems does not allow to make a conclusion about the presence of vertebral artery syndrome or any other diseases.
When dizziness appears, it is not necessary to torture your district therapist with the requirement to appoint a “vascular drip”.Much more effective to turn to a neurologist, who will help determine why dizzy.
Serious problems with vertebral arteries do occur, as well as strokes that are accompanied by dizziness. However, much more often found not so dangerous diseases that respond well to treatment. The main thing - do not engage in self-diagnosis using Google, and consult a doctor.
Back and neck pain
No matter how much one would like to believe that there is a doctor in the world with a magic wand, by the wave of which you can remove the “pinching” in the back or neck, alas, these are just vain dreams.
Most often, back pain is associated with a sedentary lifestyle. Up to 95% of back pain is benign and easily treatable. Of course, it only seems to the doctor that it will be easy. And the patient has a hard time: first, you need to believe that a miracle will not happen and you will have to get your own health, and secondly, take the first step and finally begin to practice gymnastics, go to the pool or do yoga. And it's amazing: those who still make a decision in favor of health-improving physical education, are miraculously healed. And where do the “pinchings” go?
Sometimes back pain is one of the manifestations of the radicular syndrome (“radiculitis”) - inflammation of the nerve root, most often aseptic, that is, without the participation of any pathogenic microorganisms. But here, too, the pain does not arise because the spine is “pinched” from an unsuccessful movement, turning or lifting of weights. Immunity comes into play, which begins to attack its own tissues - this is how inflammation, swelling and radicular pain are formed. It is necessary to treat this problem systemically, under the supervision of a neurologist or therapist. Sometimes a neurosurgeon may need help: an operation is performed if the pain cannot be removed for a long time by any means or if disturbing symptoms appear, such as bladder dysfunction.
This symptom can mean anything from a stroke to unsuccessfully selected contact lenses. If the vision is reduced dramatically and quickly, within a few days or hours, it is a reason to immediately consult a doctor - first, an oculist and, if he does not find anything, a neurologist. But the manual therapist - this is definitely not the expert to which you need to hurry at signs of decreased vision.
You do not need to change anything, there are no "jams" that could lead to poor eyesight. But multiple sclerosis, retinal detachment, tumors and a few dozen more can. And they do not tolerate any delay, so the consultation of the doctor is required.
This is a serious problem that requires a systematic approach. And a visit to a homeopath or an osteopath is unlikely to help here simply because anxiety attacks with other faithful companions - sweating, palpitations, nausea and dizziness - usually have a very definite reason and are not related to the "jamming" of anything.
Sometimes panic attacks are only the tip of the iceberg, a manifestation of another disease - for example, an excess of thyroid hormones or adrenal tumors. In some cases, anxiety attacks occur as a result of an imbalance of neurotransmitters in the brain, due to hereditary predisposition, severe stress, or a severe illness. In each case, the treatment is chosen individually, and an endocrinologist, therapist, psychiatrist, psychotherapist, and neurologist may participate in his selection.
Modern medicine has left in the archives of history vague ideas about "vegetative-vascular dystonia", as well as about "pinched" for no reason with this vessels or nerves or "salt deposition in the spine." Therefore, if something bothers you, you have every chance of getting an effective treatment. The main thing is not to spend time on the diagnosis on the Internet, and consult a doctor.
