Lin-Manuel Miranda's Speech in Honor of the Orlando Victims Brings the Whole Audience to Tears
During his acceptance speech for Best Score at the 2019 Tony Awards,Hamilton's Lin-Manuel Miranda paid tribute to the victims of Saturday's mass shooting at a gay club in Orlando with words of hope and empowerment that brought the whole audience to tears.
"Senseless acts of tragedy remind us that nothing here is promised, not one day," he said during his speech. "This show, [Hamilton,] is proof that history remembers: We live through times when hate and fear seem stronger; we rise and fall and light from dying embers, remembrances that hope and love last longer."
"And love is love is love is love is love is love is love is love, cannot be killed or swept aside," he continued. "Now fill the world with music, love, and pride."
Earlier today, producers for the Tony Awards proclaimed that this year's show would be dedicated to the victims of the Orlando massacre. Throughout the show, both the host, James Corden, and various award winners have spoken out in honor of those who were killed during this heartbreaking, senseless tragedy.
