    How to sew french curtains

French curtains - drapes with folds, consisting of several vertical sections, each of which is rounded at the bottom. They appeared at the court of Louis XIV, known for its splendor, and came into vogue throughout Europe. Today, such curtains look very elegant and reminiscent of the Baroque times.

In order to sew them yourself, you need more fabric than for conventional curtains - the French curtains have a lot of folds. The optimal choice of fabric for such curtains is light, flowing fabric, for example, organza, tulle, silk, satin.

Particularly beautiful are the latter because of the brilliance and the additional play of light and shadow, resulting from the folds. French curtains are well combined with classical - if, for example, tulle is decorated in this style, and "close" its usual curtains, that is, as a lambrequin.

In traditional design for such curtains are used plain fabrics. Do not confuse French curtains and curtains for French windows - these are different concepts that only the country in the name has in common.

    French curtains: measurement and calculation

You need to take a piece of fabric, the width of which will be only a little more than the width of the window eaves, for which the future curtains are intended - this difference of 4-5 cm will go to hem and seams.

And the curtain should be up to 2.5 times as high as a regular curtain for this window - this fabric will go into folds, so you choose the specific length to your liking, depending on how many folds you want to see. Do not forget to add an additional 7 cm to the processing of the upper and lower edges (tape for fasteners with rings and bends).

Each section with folds is called a festoon, and their average number is calculated by the length of the curtain. At 2.9 m. Length, 5 scallops are placed (with a distance of 58 cm.). Theoretically, small festoons are suitable for narrow windows, for wide ones and festoons should be wide, but this is applicable if you adhere to classical, well-established principles. If you want to experiment, choose an arbitrary number of festoons. Before cutting open the fabric around the edges and iron it so that there are no errors in the measurements.

Folds in French curtains are made with sewn a narrow braid, the so-called drapery, already with the rings for assembly. Prepare such a braid.
Lay the fabric inside out, smooth it out.

Make darts on all the lines that are to be drawn, to which the braid will be sewn (dividing the lines between the festoons). They should be deep enough.
Lay out the braid and fasten it with pins - the edge of the fabric should coincide with the end of the braid. On the sides of the tape should go to the very edge.
Bend the edges of the braid below and attach it.

Then bend the bottom and top of the curtains and attach the fastening tape to the last edge to the top. Sew small weights to the bottom edge of the curtains, right under the braid, so that the fabric hangs vertically and forms the right folds.

Pass the cords through the rings on the braid and tighten them, securing them. The festoons should be folded. Distribute the tension of the cords so as to get the right, beautiful folds, and tie the cords. Festons will remain fixed. Add the connecting elements to the openings in the fastening tape and hang the curtain on the eaves.

The process of sewing French curtains looks quite simple, although it takes a lot of time, but a beginner should try his hand first on some unnecessary fabric. Many nuances are solved right on the spot, and you must first get a hand in them.
