    How to grow a basil?

How to grow basil? This can be done both at home and in the garden.

    The main methods of cultivation:

    1. Use ready seedlings. You can buy them in any store that sells seedlings and seeds. A young bush, which has not yet blossomed and become covered with numerous foliage, must be moved to a new place together with an earthen lump (it is better to do this in the spring). Vegetation using this method will come quite soon, so that in the near future it will be possible to see new shoots and peduncles. At this stage, you can cut the cuttings for further reproduction and tear off tying buds.
    2. Cuttings. This method is quite simple. It is necessary to cut side young shoots from an existing plant and place them for several days in water (to speed up the process of root formation, you can add fertilizer to it). After one or two weeks, the roots will begin to appear, and after that the plant can be moved to the pot. It is best to produce grafting at the end of winter. The first juicy greens will please you after a few weeks. But such basil will not last very long: just one growing season, namely, three or four months.
    3. Growing from seed. Before planting, seeds can be soaked in some kind of stimulator, such as “Albite” or “Zircon,” but this is not necessary. Next, the seeds are immersed in the soil to a depth of about 1 or 2 centimeters and at a distance of 10 centimeters from each other. The soil is constantly moistened, and the tank must be kept warm. In addition, it should be covered with foil. Approximately in several days the first sprouts may appear (at this stage the film can be removed), and when they become fixed, they should be dived into the pots. But on the full consolidation can take about 6-8 months, only then you will see the foliage and be able to harvest. The best time to plant is winter.

If you plan to grow basil in the garden, the seedlings from the pots should be moved to the beds around the beginning of June, when temperature fluctuations will be insignificant (frost is detrimental to basil).

By the way, with any method of cultivation, it is desirable to remove the upper shoots to prevent the plant from blooming. In this case, side appendages and numerous leaves will begin to form.

    Cultivation in open soil

    Important points:

    • Beds They should be placed in rows, at a distance of 25-30 centimeters from each other. The distance between the sowing holes should be at least 25 centimeters, otherwise there is not enough room for the roots.
    • The soil. For the germination of basil, sandy light soils are most suitable, as the roots grow actively but are too weak to break through, for example, through loam. The primer should be abundantly fertilized. It is best to grow the beds, which previously grew vegetables such as potatoes, tomatoes, cucumbers and other, suggesting regular feeding.
    • Temperature. Normal temperature for germination is 20-25 degrees. With a significant decrease in its beds, it is desirable to cover the film in order to avoid basil freezing.
    • Watering. Before strengthening, watering should be abundant, then basil should be watered as needed, but not allowing the earthen clod to dry.
    • Loosening. The soil should be loosened regularly. All weeds are removed.

    Growing house

Highlights of growing basil at home:

    • Choosing a pot. It should be quite voluminous, as the roots of basil grow quickly and not only in depth, but also to the side.
    • The soil. Use nutritious soil mixed with sand and humus.
    • The choice of location. It is best to place the pot on the windowsill, and preferably on the south and well-lit side, as the plant loves light and heat. Basil should be protected from drafts.
    • Drainage. When grown at home, it is simply necessary. Before filling the pot with soil, put a broken brick, foam or expanded clay on the bottom. The drainage layer must be at least three centimeters.
    • Watering. It should be carried out regularly, namely daily. It is best to pour basil in the morning with settled water at room temperature. On hot days, you can increase the frequency up to two times a day. Also in the summer, it is advisable to spray the leaves daily to prevent them from drying out.
    • Temperature. The most optimal is about 20-25 degrees.
    • Top dressing. If the soil is not very nutritious, then fertilize it once a month using gums or organic compost.
    • Lighting. It should be sufficient, so that in winter it will be necessary to provide additional light input using lamps.

    Diseases

Basil can be affected by fungal mold or fusarium. If you see dark leaves, covered with spots, then remove them, and the rest of the powder with ashes.

    Harvesting

How to cut the greens, so as not to destroy the plant? Do not immediately tear off all the leaves, in this case, the escape will die. To harvest during the entire growing season, carefully pick off the leaves from the side shoots. It is important not to damage the stems, as well as to leave at least three leaves on each of them (in the future new shoots will start forming from them). In this case, the cut should be at a height of not less than 10 centimeters from the soil surface.

Enjoy a useful and fragrant basil!
