Foam varnish for painting concrete floor
Due to numerous requests in the comments to my videos today I will try to make a composition of foam and solvents for application to concrete. I want to see how it will behave, because car owners are interested in cheap varnish to cover the garage against dampness.Note: gas will bubble and spill out of the can. The resulting composition has the appearance of a gel and looks like napalm (at ignition it immediately flashes, burns for a long time, the flame is high). To adjust the viscosity of the composition by adding gasoline does not work - it reaches a certain thickness and this process stops. I leave the jar for some time, so that the air bubbles come out and all the pieces of foam will dissolve.Pouring the varnish on the concrete and starting to apply it with a spatula in different directions on the surface. After finishing the work on the spatula, practically nothing remains. When applying the varnish immediately smell the gasoline. I leave this area for about an hour to dry.When xylene is added to the jar, the foam will dissolve almost completely, the viscosity of the composition becomes lower, the thick lump disappears.The composition of such viscosity can be applied in a much thinner layer. It seems that xylene is better suited for the preparation of polystyrene varnish. Note: I was also advised to use 647 thinner, but it was not at hand.I will try to use the composition on xylene as varnish on wood. I take a walnut branch cleared of bark and apply a thin layer of the composition with a brush. It turns out very well, but you need to wait for the varnish to dry.I also apply a layer of the composition to the concrete with a brush. The layer is very thin and there are no air bubbles in it. I leave to dry out. The first part I didn’t completely dried out in an hour - a film with a very large number of bubbles formed on the surface.Huge bubbles formed on the sides. It feels like a well-known bubble wrap. However, as an option, such a composition can be used after complete drying.Better to get the area covered with varnish on xylene. The composition is well absorbed into the surface of the concrete and looks like a real varnish.The only negative is the high cost of xylene in comparison with gasoline.To reduce the cost, you can first dissolve the foam in gasoline, and then add xylene and achieve the desired viscosity. It will be inexpensive to prepare a composition based on draft xylene, which is sold in cans and costs less. Note: on the tree, the composition has dried in 10 minutes and is apparently indistinguishable from real varnish. In the future, for an experiment, I can take a board polished on a machine in a nearby furniture shop and apply 3-4 layers of varnish on xylene to it.
Gasoline and foamI’ll start by dissolving the foam in gasoline. We should also check in acetone and solvent, but I think that acetone dries too quickly. Pour gasoline 92 into a clean, empty metal can. Gasoline needs just over half a can. I cut a piece of foam with a length of about 1500 mm and a thickness of 40 mm into strips and drop them one by one into a can of gasoline. The width of the strip must be chosen according to the size of the can. My goal is to see how the resulting composition will behave on concrete (I do not need a lot of varnish). Polyfoam easily enters bank,melts and shrinks into a rather dense lump at the bottom.
We cover the concrete floorI pull out the gel-like mass from the bottom of the jar and transfer it to another container. I clean the area of the concrete slab with a metal brush and blow dust from the spray gun. Prepared for the work of the brush and spatula, which is lightly oiled.So the varnish will not stick. It was more convenient to work with a trowel.
Dissolve the foam in xyleneI will conduct a second experiment with xylene (one liter costs 110 rubles). If you cover the whole garage with this composition, then its cost will be 2.5 times more expensive than polystyrene varnish dissolved in gasoline. To dissolve in xylene, I chose a more dense and expensive fine-grained foam, from which the protection of the computer system unit was made.
